After about 7 months I’ve finally “finished” my sim build. When we last left off, the “table” which holds the wheel/monitor needed secured. That was secured. I don’t have any pictures of the process, but it involved some 3" screws.

Next up was the last step - something to hold the shifter! After taking some measurements, a 1x6 was cut to size and drilled appropriately. I then decided that, instead of using blocks of wood as brackets, I could use the brackets I recently found as brackets.

The rear bracket is secured with some 1/4" bolts going through the wood and the bracket. The front one is secured with some 5/8" wood screws since bolts the whole way though would interfere with the shifter itself.

This little platform was then secured to the “leg” in a place deemed comfortable by my right hand.

These brackets are serious overkill, but they were laying around so why not

Simple enough. Now, connect the shifter and try it out. At first I thought it may be a little too far back, but once I mounted the wheel and adjusted the seat it was in the right spot (whew).

Not as close to the seat as it looks

Speaking of mounting the wheel, it’s time to mount the wheel, realize the pedals and shifter still need to plug in to it, unmount it, plug it all in, then remount it. From there all that was left was to move my second monitor over and plug it in to the laptop.

Having just spent about an hour at Spa in a GT86, I can say that it is swell. The shifter’s gears are pretty close together, which took some getting used to (the unintentional 5-2 downshifts were not fun). All in all, I’m quite pleased.

What’s next?

I’ll be moving soon, at which point I’ll be removing the seat and electronics (for transportation) and would like to give the whole thing a coat of paint at that time. I do also want to put some sort of carpet on the base, and maybe angle up the pedals a little bit. After a while it gets to be a weird angle.

I also have most of the graphics settings turned to their lowest (or nearly lowest) settings so my 5+ year old laptop is able to run it smoothly. Eventually (not any time soon though) I’d like to build a computer which, as a side benefit, would be capable of running this is high detail on multiple monitors.

In terms of the sim itself, I’d like to put some speakers on it somewhere so the sound isn’t coming entirely from off to the side where my stereo is, and in the long-run maybe put one of those seat-rumbler things on the bottom of the seat.

For the time being though, it is fantastic.

In this position I’d recommend to swap the clutch and gas pedal and reverse your pedals like this... Much better to drive.

Also make sure you can easily upgrade to a triple screen setup at some point, allowing more space for the eventual 2 other monitors you may buy one day...

Interesting! I’ll have to look in to flipping the pedals like that.

I already have a bracket design in mind for the eventual 3-screen setup.
